Today I weighed in at Curves. Down 8 pounds which is good BUT my % of body fat went up! I was told that I need to watch and be sure to have enough proteins and some good fats. They said that my body is taking too much from muscle and not enough from fat. I have tried to be careful to have all my protein servings a day but perhaps need to add another one.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I’m exercising more and actually GAINED a pound last week. I now have protein at each snack and meal; I hope this trend ends soon……

Today was the first time that someone asked if I have lost weight! I was awaiting this day! She said she could see it in my face. Am glad about that; did not really like the chipmunk cheeks!

Hi Linda, Congratulations on the 8 pound loss! Great progress. I have a question… what do they use at Curves to measure your % of body fat? Calipers? Something electronic that looks like a scale? Some ways are more precise than others, and it could be different depending on who is doing the measuring. Several years ago (and I mean SEVERAL) I was on a weight loss program and had gotten my weight down to my goal of 122. They measured my % body fat with some kind of electronic thing-a-majig and said I had 30% body fat. It totally bummed me out and I lost all my excitement over my weight loss. A few weeks later I had my % body fat measured a different way and it measured at 25% which was much closer to the truth.
It is true that some “skinny” looking people can actually be pretty fat because they have very little muscle mass. If you keep to the program and keep working out, which will increase your muscle mass, you’ll be OK. At least it doesn’t sound like you let the % increase bother you which is good. You have a great attitude and I have no doubt you’ll reach your goals.

They use a hand held machine. At week 8, I was down 12 pounds and 2% of the body fat.
